~1.5 mile bike cool down
It was overcast, drizzly, and chilly so I wasn't exactly enthusiastic about doing this, especially since there was no entry fee to forfeit. Thanks to the cloud cover the night before, the air temp was around 55. The water temp was around 59 or 60! As I waded into the water after setting up my transition I felt cold but not unbearably so. The wetsuit is amazing. I HATE cold water but even this was tolerable. After swimming about 100 yd I thought, 'What the hell am I doing?!' Eventually I settled into a rhythm and just kept going.
The bike was cool and breezy so I wore a windbreaker, a smart move. When I got off the bike and changed into running shoes, my stomach muscles cramped up. My feet were freezing from the ride and felt like numb blocks instead of feet. It took half the run for them to be close to normal.
In the end I'm glad I did this event because, as usual, I learned something. I learned that I can tolerate the cold water when necessary. Come April in Oceanside, I won't be too worried about that as I normally would. I also need some sort of bike shoe cover to keep my feet from freezing. Most triathlon bike shoes are designed for warm or hot weather and are ventilated to release heat. I think it would be wise to get something that will cover those vents and keep my tootsies warm! And one more thing: preparation for as many potentialities is important. Next time I have a jacket available to wear I think I'll have the sleeves turned right-side-out!
