Solana Beach Sprint Triathlon - 1/4 mile swim, 9 mile bike, 3 mile run
1:01:36 - 11th out of 36 Men 50-54, 188th of 589 Men all ages, and 206th of 957 overall.
This is my second Solana Beach Tri. I also did it in 2007. Thanks to the love of my life, Mrs Sladed, for being there on a Sunday morning. Strong north current required an adjustment on how I started. It probably made the swim south easier. Wore my bodyboarding spring wetsuit instead of my new triathlon wetsuit because of the short distance of the swim. The bike and swim were fine. I negative split the run. Transitions seem to be better. Stood up to put shoes on. Had a little trouble with one running shoe. Grabbed a cup of water with 1st 20 meters of run and choked on the water. Need to either walk while drinking or not drink. Did not take water or liquid for rest of run. This was planned since the race was only going to be about 1 hour long. Goal was to break 60 min. Since the swim always varies (currents, conditions, and buoy placement are variable) I view it as a "constant". Since last year's swim was 1:29 faster, I consider the course this year to be 1:29 slower. How's that for rationalizing and being happy with my final time of 1:01:36 (or 1:00:07 by my logic)?! Also happy with my run split.
Learned: 1. I need to practice putting shoes on and changing shoes in transition. I was better than past transitions but there's room to improve. Having the shoes open and ready to step into would help. 2. Don't grab a cup of water at the aid station right after T2 and try to drink it. All I did was choke for the next 200 yds!
