Obstacles and Training in December

December can be a very difficult time for training and exercising. Thanksgiving week tends to be the start of some challenges in getting everything done: family time, work, parties, shopping, traveling, and everything else may be more demanding and time consuming than at other times during the year. If you're also trying to follow a training plan for a race in the first half of next year, finding time to get consistent training in can be a very difficult to do. And things may not slow down until the New Year!

With all the additional things you may find on your plate, or calendar, it can be tough to be motivated to get your training in. How you handle the 'time crunch' depends on doing a little pre-planning, adapting, and flexibility. Here are some suggestions for having a successful December:

  • Do not have an "all or nothing" attitude. If you have a 90 minute workout scheduled but only have 40 or even just 20 minutes to spare, just do that! SOMEthing is WAY better than nothing. There's something to be said for doing a workout, no matter it's length, 6 days out of 7 as compared to putting in the same amount of time in during a weekend. (Important: even when you're short on time, do not cut out the warm up or cool down!)
  • Next year be sure to plan in advance when thinking about races. If it's a struggle to get good training in during December then a January 1/2 marathon or marathon, for example, may not be a wise thing to put on the calendar. On the other hand, if your A race is a triathlon in late November then using late December to gradually getting into a routine after taking a break might be part of a smart race calendar.
  • Be flexible! If you are traveling or have visitors, think beyond swimming and cycling. Being active and doing something considered to be a winter sport still counts as a workout. A little cross training might be just the thing you need to stay fresh and have some fun.
Finally, December is a great time to be thinking about what your obstacles will be in the coming week and also in the coming year. Are you traveling or commuting? Turn off that music, podcast, audiobook, or cell phone and spend some quiet time identifying what the obstacles to your training and success might be. Then think about ways you can overcome these obstacles. Can you plan your time better? How about adjusting your priorities? Can you eliminate activities that are no longer important to you. Can you keep your workout clothes with you for a spur of the moment training opportunity? Can you ask your family, friends, and/or coworkers for emotional support to help you stay on track?

With a little forethought and effort you can set yourself up to have a successful year ahead.
