Written 3/29 - This week I made into a modified taper week. Dropped all strength training and also only did morning workouts. None of the preparation leading into this week was normal and since I wasn't actually going to finish the race on Saturday, I wasn't sure how I would train this week going in. The shoulder gradually improved, though it's taking about 1 1/2 weeks longer than I expected to fully heal. Because of this my swims have been gradually increasing in duration instead of a normal taper.
I had been looking forward to the race anyway because of the chance to meet some new people I've been in touch with over the internet through iamtri.com. When Friday rolled around, after I picked up my race stuff on Thursday, I started feeling disappointed and angry that I'm still dealing with this foot injury. It pointed out the obvious, though I was not very aware of it: I wanted to get out there and race! I wanted to compete!
Now I need to understand and use that information and those feelings going forward as I try to get to the next level. I am aware that I can use those feelings and that drive to push myself when I need to push. But it's not some raw, basic testosterone-y thing. It's the passion that's already there coupled with the desire to compete, to strive for a goal, to improve. And if the disappointment and anger I felt this week are to be used intelligently, it means NOT pushing when it's time to recover, and stopping to protect myself from injury when I need to.
Wow, not sure where all that came from but I'm glad it came!
