2016 Goals and Resolutions

As we come to the end of 2016 some people begin to think about New Year's resolutions and goals for the year ahead; about making changing or refocusing; about what our priorities are. As a triathlete I know that you've thought about this at least some! I encourage you to MAKE a little quiet time for yourself so you can spend a little time thinking and/or writing.

Our time is often consumed by activities, TV/radio, music listening, the internet, cell phone use, social media, obligations, commitments, and more. Many of us don't take the time to be introspective and to truly commit to goals or resolutions. We are just "so busy". Here are a few ways you can find, or make, time:
  • SCHEDULE an appointment with yourself.
  • While driving by yourself, turn off your music, podcasts, TED Talks, news, and entertainment. Ignore text notifications and phone calls. Write down your thoughts BEFORE you get out of the car.
  • Find a space where you could curl up with a book and instead, curl up with yourself and maybe a piece of paper.
  • Go for a walk or easy run WITHOUT headphones and without worrying about distance, pace, or heart rate. Take a notepad with you or use an app on your phone to record thoughts and goals.

Think about the previous year. Identify things that went well and things that you think you could do better. Think about the coming year. What races are on your calendar? What are your key goals? What do you need to do to achieve them? Do you have resolutions outside of triathlon that you would like to make? (Resolutions, large and small, tend to be about personal change or self-improvement or things you want to be better at.)

Decide if your goals and resolutions are realistic or achievable. Decide how you will accomplish them. Will you enlist support from others by sharing your intentions and asking your supporters to keep you accountable? Will you write down what you want to achieve so that you can remind yourself of your commitment and hold yourself accountable? Will you set smaller, intermediate goals that will help you mark your progress? What will work for you and help you succeed?

May your 2016 be a healthy, rewarding year for you; one filled with joy and gratitude.
