I shared my preliminary goals for Ironman Arizona this week in a separate post. I want to put them out there because Linda and I gave a presentation on goal setting to the Team Challenge Tri team on June 30th. The preparation for that clinic presentation inspired me to make my own goals concrete and to not just "talk the talk". Combining that goal setting with the past 2 weeks of solid training has reminded me of why I pursue this and it's reinvigorated me far more than I would have expected. First of all, it's clear what some good, purposeful training does to my mood and spirit. I think that's one of the very appealing parts about this whole exercise / triathlon / Ironman lifestyle thing.
People will ask why I like triathlon and why, even "crazier", do I do Ironman triathlons. I always come up with something a bit short on explanation. It's hard for me to put those things into words. And what I just tried to express in the first paragraph above is really just ONE of many, many things I find so appealing, enjoyable, and worthwhile about it. The challenge, the people and relationships, the lifestyle, the discipline, the physical and emotional highs - without going into more detail, those are also big parts of this Ironman journey. I love that journey.
This past week's long ride on Sunday was not the best but not bad. I made sure it was 4.5 solid hours, mostly uninterrupted, knowing the last 1/2 hour and beyond would have a long break so I could meet up with some other riders on Fiesta Island.
The coming week may again be challenging on the training front but if it is I'll take it as a partial rest and then come back strong next weekend. I also need to be more structured and focused on what I aim to do with elliptical and walking based on current and possible future limitations in November. Will start keeping track of pace and distance of walk training to be consistent and know if my goals are realistic. While I hate to even think about a walk dominated Ironman marathon, I hate the idea of not making it to the start line even more.
Weighed 158.0 during the week.
